APPENDIX A: TOOLS

QUANTIZE

Quantize is used to snap selected events to the current time grid or a groove pattern. It's used like a box selection tool: Click and drag the area you want to quantize. There are two shapes to control how the quantize is applied. The Groove shape is used to provide a pattern to quantize to; when it's empty, the selection is quantized to the current time grid. The Attraction shape is used to determine how much quantize is applied to each event.

GROOVE SHAPE

When the Groove shape is empty, the selection is quantized to the current time grid. With a time-based shape selected (click on Select... and choose a shape either from the Grooves submenu or the Swings submenu, or use a groove or swing shape you've created with Shapify), the selection is quantized based on the groove (or swing).

ATTRACTION SHAPE

The Attraction shape controls how much quantize is applied to each event. By default, the shape is set to 1 for all values -- maximum quantize is applied. The Amount '%' control can be used to immediately adjust the amount of quantize.

1. a line of 16ths 2. quantized to 1/4 notes 3. amount at 50%

By default, the Attraction shape has a variety of controls for adjusting where the quantize is applied: You can set the bar and beat amounts to lock the quantize to each bar and/or beat, and you can use the sync controls (center, width, shape) to determine what gets quantized within the bar or beat sync. Additionally, you can draw directly in the Attraction shape to precisely control the quantize

1. bar amount at 1 2. sync center at 0.8 3. custom shape
